Geology: Vanadinite is a striking, brittle lead mineral formed deep within the oxidation zones of lead deposits. This secondary mineral begins its life as primary lead ore, usually galena but, over thousands of years, oxygen-rich surface water seeps into the earth, oxidizing the galena while leaching vanadium from nearby volcanic rocks and shales. As this mineral-rich cocktail pools near the water table, evaporation and shifting acidity trigger a beautiful transformation. The dissolved lead, vanadium, oxygen, and chlorine ions precipitate inside rocky pockets, growing into sharp, hexagonal crystals. Known for their brilliant blood-red to vibrant orange hues and glassy, resinous lustre, these barrel-shaped prisms often form dramatic clusters that pop against a stark white barite or dark brown goethite background.
Globally vanadinite is considered rare as it is incredibly unusual for lead and vanadium to cross paths in high enough concentrations to form significant deposits.
