Northwest Stony Iron Meteorites - P.Y.O
This listing is for one amazing specimen of a North West (Africa) Stony Iron Meteorite (Mesosiderite) which is sold as seen.
Stony-iron meteorites are mixtures of nickel-iron and silicate minerals and originate from the thin zone of melted rock that lies between an asteroid's mantle and core. These meteorites contain the silicate mineral olivine trapped in the iron and they are sub categorized into two classifications - pallasites and mesosiderites. Pallasites contain an equal amount of olivine and nickel iron by volume and are among the rarest and most beautiful meteorites. Mesosiderites are composed of angular rock fragments of different mineral compositions.
Stony-iron meteorites represent less than 2% of meteorites that fall to Earth. Their rarity is attributed to their unique formation processes, which provide valuable insights into the differences between planetary bodies.
