Fluorapatite Tumblestone (Morocco)

Fluorapatite from Morocco is primarily a yellow-green colour and is hand mined near Imilchil, Midelt Province, situated high up in the Atlas Mountains.

Millions of years ago, hot alkaline magma intruded into the sedimentary rock layers of the Atlas Mountains and as it cooled, it released dense, superheated fluids rich in calcium, phosphorus, and fluorine. These mineral-heavy fluids filled "vugs", which are natural gas pockets and hollow cavities within surrounding rocks like feldspar and calcite. Over thousands of years, the fluid crystallized into hexagonal fluorapatite prisms when a distinct yellow-green shade was created by trace amounts of iron and rare-earth elements trapped within.
