Geology: Dendritic Psilomelane is a striking, fractal-like pattern of manganese oxide formed as ground-water minerals seep through rock fractures. Whilst these fern-like shapes resemble fossilized plants, these "black trees" are purely inorganic, composed primarily of psilomelane and pyrolusite. "Psilomelane" is a historical, catch-all term for hard, black manganese oxides like romanechite and the name dates back to 1758 and derives from the Greek words psilos (smooth/naked) and melas (black).
These intricate, fractal-like patterns are formed when manganese-rich water solutions migrate through the tiny fractures and pore spaces of host rocks like limestone or sandstone. As the water evaporates or conditions change, the manganese oxide precipitates out and crystallizes in these distinct patterns. These beautiful structures act as geological fingerprints, recording the region's ancient hydrogeochemical history by trapping manganese nanoparticles in infiltrating fluid pulses.
Metaphysical Properties: Psilomelane is known as the "Stone of Duality" and is believed to help harmonize the yin/yang we all have within us, while balancing masculine and feminine energies.
