Crinoid Fossil Tumblestone
Crinoids are marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata and the class Crinoidea. They are an ancient fossil group that first appeared in the seas of the mid Cambrian, about 300 million years before dinosaurs. They flourished in the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic eras and some survive to the present day.
Crinoid fossils are found globally across every continent, primarily preserved in Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Because they are major contributors to limestone formations, their disc-like columnal stems are among the most abundant marine fossils in the world. The tumblestones contrast the crinoid fragments against the darker matrix. Complete specimens are very rare.
