History: This is a genuine fragment of the famous Nantan Meteorite, an iron-nickel asteroid that violently broke apart over China in May of 1516. Recorded by imperial astronomers during the Ming Dynasty, this is one of the rare "witnessed falls" in human history. The 1958 Mystery: For over 400 years, these pieces lay buried. In 1958, during China's steel drive, local peasants dug them up thinking they were iron ore. However, because of their high space-born nickel content, they refused to melt in backyard furnaces! Geologists were called in and discovered they were actually pristine iron meteorites as old as the Earth itself.
