Abalone shells have been utilized for personal adornment and trade by coastal civilizations for over 100,000 years.

They are the protective outer casing of marine gastropod mollusks (sea snails),  that are renown for their vibrant, iridescent, mother-of-pearl (nacre) interiors of rainbow-like swirls of blue, green, and purple, which give them their captivating and unique appearance.  

Abalone Shells are said to represent emotional balance and peace and it is believed that they soothe anxiety, calm emotional turmoil, and promote tranquillity and that this is symbolized by the ebbing and flowing of the tides of the coastal waters of the oceans that they call home. Furthermore, the protective hard shell for the soft mollusk within, is, in metaphysical practices believed to offer emotional and spiritual protection to those who carry it. 

In Indigenous and spiritual traditions, Abalone Shells are a sacred tool used for purification  during rituals and pieces of the shells are used to bring luck and prosperity.  

These beautiful and unique shells retain their value worldwide due to the slow growth rate of the Abalone, taking 2-4 years to reach adulthood plus the high costs of both sustainable and wild harvesting.
