Small Orthoceras Heart Dish

This heart shaped dish has been carved from fossilized Orthoceras. Orthoceras also known as Orthoceratites, is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopods who were the ancient ancestors of the octopus and squid that we know today. They roamed the seas over 400 million years ago and its name is derived from the words “straight horn”, referring to it’s long, conical shell. Today their fossilized remains are commonly found on a rock matrix and are commonly used as a carving or sculpting material due to the fossil’s hardness.

This dish is totally unique and one of kind and measures approx. 11cms x 11cms x 1cms (W x H x D), and has a small raised platform to centre the top.
