Optical Calcite Tumblestone

Optical Calcite, also known as Iceland Spar, is a transparent variety of Calcite, a mineral composed of calcium carbonate. It's notable for birefringence i.e. its ability to double refract light, meaning it splits a beam of light into two rays, causing a double image when looking through it. This feature of the crystal gave rise to the belief that the Vikings used this stone as a navigation aid due to its ability to split sunlight into two rays, making it easier to locate the position of the sun on cloudy days.
