Fire Wood Agate Tumblestone

Fire Wood Agate, also known as Flame Agate, is a variety of chalcedony which is known for its distinctive multi-coloured flashes that radiate from within the stone. The colours are caused by iron oxide. It is formed by volcanic activity and is similar in appearance to quartz, but displays interesting swirls, bubbles, and patterns. These patterns are unpredictable and so each piece is unique.

Fire Wood Agate is naturally a hard crystal, full of grooves and deep pits, which makes it hard to get them smooth and they also contain layers of other minerals such as iron oxide and hematite that give the "Fire" effect but this layer is very thin and softer than the rest of the agate. This composition when tumbled may result in the "fire" layer crumbling a little because it's so soft.  Hence the tumblestones may display grooves which are not flaws but perfectly natural for this crystal after being tumbled.
