When the coral colonies died, their calcium carbonate skeletons were buried by layers of marine sediment and over time became fossilized as the original organic material was gradually replaced by minerals like calcite, preserving the coral’s intricate internal structure, turning the skeletons into limestone rock.

This remained buried until about two million years ago when glacial ice sheets scoured the bedrock, plucking fragments of the fossilized coral and scattering them across the landscape, grinding and tumbling their rough edges. The resulting pebbles were deposited in the glacial till and ended up along beaches and in inland gravel deposits.

The patterns on the stones is a cross-section of the individual skeletal structures, known as corallites, which once housed the living coral polyps. These corallites are tightly packed, forming the characteristic six-sided, or hexagonal, shapes visible on the stone’s surface. The middle of each hexagon marks the location of the former mouth of the coral polyp, often appearing as a dark spot from which thin lines radiate outward.

The Petoskey stone is said to symbolize hope and renewal, reflecting its connection to the ancient coral reefs and its historical significance showing the continuity, resilience and the enduring power of nature.

Chakra: Third Eye & Crown.

You will receive one unique hand picked stone measuring approx. 25-40mm.

All our crystals are ethically sourced and genuine.

**Please note, these are natural stones and each is unique but may have its own small imperfections such as inclusions, pits or markings within the crystal itself - this is part of their natural beauty and as nature intended they are not perfect.
