They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian Period (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian Period mass extinction (250 million years ago). Their success and longevity is believed in part to be due to a hard exoskeleton (shell), which meant they they left an excellent fossil record.
